Dayglow is a party craze that is sweeping the nation. While the headlining acts vary from city to city, there is one constant on the “Dayglow Escape Reality Tour”: paint (and lots of it).
After selling out the original night of the tour in Philadelphia so quickly that many people were unable to secure tickets, the folks at Art of Electronica (who were responsible for bringing Dayglow to Philly) added a second night (which took place the night before and featured local hip-hop and electronica phenom Diplo).
The Friday night party with Diplo was also a complete sell-out. We spoke to members of AoE before and during the event who were very excited about bringing it to Philadelphia and after we experienced the Diplo event as fans on Friday evening, it was easy to see why. AoE is also gearing up for the opening of their new night-club in Philly (called “Rumor”) in the coming weeks which will feature lots of electronic music.
On Saturday night, Independent Philly returned to Dayglow to capture all of the madness for our readers. The rave-esque party, held at the Navy Ship Yard in South Philadelphia, played host to thousands of rabid fans, dressed almost completely in white attire from head to toe. Not even the terrible weather on Saturday (and it was bad enough to produce significant flooding) could keep party-goers’ excitement levels at bay as they waited in line to enter the venue, dance for hours on end, and get covered, from head to toe, in florescent (non-toxic) paint.
The paint is shot from canons and hand held pressure guns (from the stage) onto the crowd during timed intervals at Dayglow, but bottles of paint are also sold (and sold out on Saturday) to those in attendance. Once in hand, the paint quickly gets poured on everyone, and everything, in close proximity.
The night was redonk.
The venue was jammed with people, many trying to get as close to the stage as possible. Those closest to the front were literally covered from head to toe in paint repeatedly throughout the night.
While Diplo had played more hip-hop on Friday night, Roger Sanchez was all about the house music on Saturday. In addition to the headlining act, there were opening DJ’s, stage dancers, giant balloons, singers, confetti, smoke canons, and much more. Paint flew, sweat poured, and thousands of bodies danced and mashed together.
There were a few issues, as there generally are with any large scale event, that people brought to our attention (the wait in line to get inside the party was quite lengthy, water cost $5 a bottle, and the venue staff seemed somewhat disorganized) but almost everyone we spoke to seemed to be having the time of their life. It truly had to be seen to be believed. Luckily for you, we have assembled two photo galleries with nearly 200 photos from the event. The first gallery can be viewed here:
