Sander Van Doorn Houses Fans at Rumor

When it comes to Progressive House DJs, there are few that can be placed on the same level as Sander van Doorn.  He is ranked number sixteen on DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs list and has released a number of monster hits in the past twelve months.  With songs like ‘Eagles’, ‘Chasin’, ‘Nothing Inside’, and ‘Kangaroo’ all released recently it seems like he is just starting to hit the peak of his career. Even though he plays for over a million fans all over the world each year, he still has time to host his own Identity podcast on Sirius XM. After seeing him throw down a high energy set at Electric Zoo, there was no way that we could miss his first appearance in Philadelphia.

Pulling up to the chic club Rumor, the well dressed line out front was packed with people excited to see Sander and to celebrate the one year anniversary of the club.  Everyone could tell that this was going to be a special night and they were anxious to see what Rumor had in store for them.  While I was walking down the marble stairs to the club (in a former bank building), I could already see people dancing in the bar area to the unique style and sounds of Michael Myers.

If you are familiar with the club scene in Philadelphia, then you better know who Michael Myers is.  Older fans will remember him from his days in Local 13 in the 1990’s. Today he is a producer and resident DJ at Rumor that has always plays solid sets. Recently he has opened for superstar DJs including Gareth Emery, Morgan Page, and Michael Woods. The dance floor was packed for his set and he had everyone dancing and having a great time.  You could tell that he was really feeding off of the crowd’s energy and he was having a lot of fun up there.  There were also dancers on pedestals which added to the party atmosphere.  In addition, plenty of bottles of champagne and liquor were brought to the VIP section throughout the night, which was impossible to miss because they had sparklers attached to the top of them (nothing says, “I’m important, look at me” quite like a bottle of vodka shooting sparks).

Sander van Doorn wasted no time getting the crowd jumping around by opening up with his Beatport top ten single ‘Kangaroo’.  This is his newest single that he worked with 16 year old producer Julian Jordan to create.  It is different than most of his previous songs because it has a dubby drop which brings a lot of energy to the track.  He followed this song with a remix of the summer smash hit ‘Spectrum’ by Zedd who had coincidentally done a show the night before in Philadelphia.  To add to the excitement, glowing LED batons were thrown into the crowd and people were waving them around to the beat.  One of our favorite moments of the night happened a couple of songs later when Sander played his summer hit ‘Nothing Inside’.  This song has amazing emotional vocals and it was great to see everyone singing along to it.

The biggest surprise of the night was when Cryoman, a LED lit up robot armed with lasers and cryo guns came out.  Cryoman was so tall that he almost reached the ceiling while he filled up the dance floor with smoke.  Everyone took out their cameras to take a picture of him.

The rest of the night was full of great Sander songs and recent club bangers.  His ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ and ‘Koko’ edit had the crowd dancing and singing along to one of the biggest songs of the year.  He also included songs by DJs that have recently been in Philadelphia such as ‘Rock the House’ by Afrojack and ‘Allein’ by Eric Prydz.  The house was definitely rocking by this time.  People were cheating their way past the ropes upfront and Sander showed his appreciation to his fans by shaking a couple of their hands in the middle of his set.

Our favorite part of the set was when he played his hit song ‘Eagles’. With lyrics ‘I’m holding on forever it’s true, can you feel the way I do?’, we’re pretty sure that everyone will be holding onto this memorable night forever.  As if that wasn’t enough, Sander continued with a three song encore which included the hottest song out right now ‘Dont You Worry Child’ by Swedish House Mafia.  It was a great way to end a great night. We are looking forward to see what Rumor has up their sleeve for 2013.

Interview with Sander Van Doorn

We’ve had plans to speak with DJ/producer Sander Van Doorn since we crossed paths at Tomorrowland in Belgium this past July. The award winner, globe trotting,  superstar will be rolling into town this Friday night to play at Rumor so we had a few quick questions for him before once again catching him showcase his skills in the DJ booth.

Independent Philly: Why did you choose the Surname Van Doorn to DJ under?

Sander Van Doorn: Well, my actual surname is Ketelaars so I did make a decision to go with Van Doorn. Just sounded better than Ketelaars, easier to remember I think.

IP: It’s been a year since you released your last album, do you have any plans to release one in the near future?

SVD: Yes working on it now, but no release date in sight. Maybe the end of the year, but letting it flow naturally so we’ll see what happens.

IP: What other projects/tracks are you currently working on?

SVD: I am part of the Halo 4 remix album which is very exciting. That is out in October.

IP: Who’s another DJ/Producer that you’d love to collaborate with that you haven’t had the chance to work with?

SVD: Moby.

IP: Is there an up and coming DJ/Producer who is currently below the radar that you think deserves some attention?

SVD: I think Julian Jordan is one to watch.

IP: You have an upcoming show in Philadelphia on September 21st at Rumor. What can your fans expect from a Sander Van Doorn set that have never seen you in person?

SVD: Will be very high octane, be ready!

IP: What’s the largest crowd you’ve ever performed in front of?

SVD: Not totally sure, I think around 150,000.

IP: If you had to choose between DJing, Producing, and Remixing, which would you do exclusively?

SVD: Producing for sure.

IP: Tell us something that would surprise or even shock our readers…

SVD: I worked in my brother’s aluminum shop before I got my first DJ gig.

We’re looking forward to catching Sander Van Doorn at Rumor this Friday for their one year anniversary party. If you’d like to join in all of the fun we highly recommend purchasing advanced tickets.  See you there Philly!

Steve Angello: Swedish House Mania at the Electric Factory

Arriving at the Electric Factory prior to sound check on Friday night (September 7, 2012) we could instantly tell that it was going to be a special evening. UniverCity Entertainment had brought out the big guns. Six cryo cannons, six confetti cannons, hazers, and lasers covered the front of the stage with a large digital wall hanging behind the DJ booth. While the visual aspects of the show would be stunning, there was little doubt that fans were coming out for the music. That’s the kind of drawing power that Steve Angello (of Swedish House Mafia and Size Records fame) has.

The first opening spot of the night went to youngster Max Gold. Whether it was nerves, unfamiliarity with the equipment, or an issue outside the realm of our knowledge, the opening set was a bit of a technical disaster. The sound cut out completely at least three times during his set and the term “train-wreck” was thrown around several times in the audience.

The Electric Factory began to fill up as DJ Johnny V took the stage. Johnny V has been developing a strong local following in the Philly region. For proof of this you need look no further than the fact that he was awarded his slot by garnering hundreds of votes in an online contest. His versatility across several EDM genres helped set the stage for what was a magical evening. This guy isn’t going anywhere (but up). Johnny V will be playing shows all throughout the fall with the likes of Krewella, Tommy Trash, Figure, Sander Van Doorn, Chris Lake, and beyond.

Next up on the night was Fareoh who brought mayhem to the stage for all of his fans throughout his hour and a half set. Unloading  choice house tracks and heavy electro beats, he kept the crowd pumping on the dance floor, getting them prepped for Steve Angello.

Finally it was time for the headlining set. The hype for this event had been huge, but would Steve Angello deliver the goods? To put it simply, Fed Ex and UPS better watch their backs.

With the venue packed to the gills, Steve Angello threw down an epic set. From start to finish his track selection, audience engagement, and mixing were spot on.

Dropping hits from Swedish House Mafia, his own catalog, and those of his contemporaries, he stunned everyone in the building (from the novice EDM fans to the DJs in the audience) with his wizardry.

As the cryo-cannons blasted, the lasers beamed, and the confetti and streamers rained down, fans rocked out to every last beat. When Angello finally left the stage just before 2am, fans chanted for “one more song”! Alas, there would be no encore, but an encore wasn’t necessary.
