Sander Van Doorn Houses Fans at Rumor

When it comes to Progressive House DJs, there are few that can be placed on the same level as Sander van Doorn.  He is ranked number sixteen on DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs list and has released a number of monster hits in the past twelve months.  With songs like ‘Eagles’, ‘Chasin’, ‘Nothing Inside’, and ‘Kangaroo’ all released recently it seems like he is just starting to hit the peak of his career. Even though he plays for over a million fans all over the world each year, he still has time to host his own Identity podcast on Sirius XM. After seeing him throw down a high energy set at Electric Zoo, there was no way that we could miss his first appearance in Philadelphia.

Pulling up to the chic club Rumor, the well dressed line out front was packed with people excited to see Sander and to celebrate the one year anniversary of the club.  Everyone could tell that this was going to be a special night and they were anxious to see what Rumor had in store for them.  While I was walking down the marble stairs to the club (in a former bank building), I could already see people dancing in the bar area to the unique style and sounds of Michael Myers.

If you are familiar with the club scene in Philadelphia, then you better know who Michael Myers is.  Older fans will remember him from his days in Local 13 in the 1990’s. Today he is a producer and resident DJ at Rumor that has always plays solid sets. Recently he has opened for superstar DJs including Gareth Emery, Morgan Page, and Michael Woods. The dance floor was packed for his set and he had everyone dancing and having a great time.  You could tell that he was really feeding off of the crowd’s energy and he was having a lot of fun up there.  There were also dancers on pedestals which added to the party atmosphere.  In addition, plenty of bottles of champagne and liquor were brought to the VIP section throughout the night, which was impossible to miss because they had sparklers attached to the top of them (nothing says, “I’m important, look at me” quite like a bottle of vodka shooting sparks).

Sander van Doorn wasted no time getting the crowd jumping around by opening up with his Beatport top ten single ‘Kangaroo’.  This is his newest single that he worked with 16 year old producer Julian Jordan to create.  It is different than most of his previous songs because it has a dubby drop which brings a lot of energy to the track.  He followed this song with a remix of the summer smash hit ‘Spectrum’ by Zedd who had coincidentally done a show the night before in Philadelphia.  To add to the excitement, glowing LED batons were thrown into the crowd and people were waving them around to the beat.  One of our favorite moments of the night happened a couple of songs later when Sander played his summer hit ‘Nothing Inside’.  This song has amazing emotional vocals and it was great to see everyone singing along to it.

The biggest surprise of the night was when Cryoman, a LED lit up robot armed with lasers and cryo guns came out.  Cryoman was so tall that he almost reached the ceiling while he filled up the dance floor with smoke.  Everyone took out their cameras to take a picture of him.

The rest of the night was full of great Sander songs and recent club bangers.  His ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ and ‘Koko’ edit had the crowd dancing and singing along to one of the biggest songs of the year.  He also included songs by DJs that have recently been in Philadelphia such as ‘Rock the House’ by Afrojack and ‘Allein’ by Eric Prydz.  The house was definitely rocking by this time.  People were cheating their way past the ropes upfront and Sander showed his appreciation to his fans by shaking a couple of their hands in the middle of his set.

Our favorite part of the set was when he played his hit song ‘Eagles’. With lyrics ‘I’m holding on forever it’s true, can you feel the way I do?’, we’re pretty sure that everyone will be holding onto this memorable night forever.  As if that wasn’t enough, Sander continued with a three song encore which included the hottest song out right now ‘Dont You Worry Child’ by Swedish House Mafia.  It was a great way to end a great night. We are looking forward to see what Rumor has up their sleeve for 2013.

Great Night of EDM From A to Zedd

On Thursday night, September 20th, Steez promo, NV concepts, and Mass EDMC brought a lineup of epic proportions to Philly with headliners Zedd and Lucky Date and opening sets by Khadafi Dub and Speaker of the House & Amenzo.

The doors opened at 9pm with a small line waiting anxiously to get inside. First up was local Philly producer Speaker of the House alongside Amenzo. Who is Speaker of the House? Just one of the most up and coming producers in the city. If you haven’t heard of him, look him up – the bandwagon has left the station, but its not too late to catch a ride. Speaker of the House and Amenzo played from 9-10pm to a great sized crowd for the first hour of the show. Having an arsenal of original mixes at their disposal, they had the crowd going crazy. When the clock hit 10pm things would only get more wild.

Up next was Khadafi Dub. Khadafi Dub, who just recently was awarded the title of “Best Dubstep MC/Host” at the 2012 Dubstep Music Awards, played a mixture of trap music and dubstep. Regardless of the genre of music, he played banger after banger that had the entire crowd, which at this point was filling in most of the dance floor, going absolutely nuts.

Up next was Lucky Date. As if the energy was not already high enough in the venue, Lucky played such great music that the crowd just didn’t know what to expect next. If concert goers are wondering why they were so sore the next day, they should point fingers in Lucky Date’s direction. Amazingly, the night was nowhere close to being over.

At 1215pm German born Anton Zaslavski, aka Zedd, made his way out onto the stage. At only 22 years of age, Zedd, who was labeled a “prodigy” by the New York Times, has come a long way in an incredibly short amount of time. Playing alongside big names such as Skrillex and Deadmau5, Zedd has quickly become a world-class DJ with a bright future ahead of him. Once on stage, Zedd quickly began playing incredible songs one after another. And while many call Dillon Francis a party animal for his wild on stage antics (such as getting up on stage and giving Zedd himself the middle finger at a Los Angeles club) Zedd showed that he has a sense of humor as well with his track collection. Its not everyday that a DJ puts a remix to “Who let the dogs out” or “I like to move it move it” in their set. With the attention of the audience completely captivated, Zedd played until about 145am. When Zedd left the stage, the audience had only one hope left, scream, yell, chant, and shout as loud as they possibly could with the hopes that Zedd would come back out for one more song. Guess what? It worked.

Zedd walked back on stage, grabbed the mic, and screamed, “Philly! I fucking love you! You guys are awesome!”. He then said, “I am going to play you my favorite song in the whole world!”…(if you have seen the video of Zedd and Skillex after Ezoo, you may know where this is going)… he then played the beginning of Avicii’s Levels, picked up the mic, and said, “this is Levels by the Swedish House Mafia!”. The crowd loved it. After levels played for a about 30 seconds, he quickly transitioned into his “actual favorite song in the world”, and gave the audience exactly what they wanted.

Starlight Ballroom is a far cry from the fancier venues that have popped up around the city in recent years. It’s the type of place in which patrons are guaranteed to taste the steaming, hot, sticky sweat dripping off of the people dancing nearby. But you know what? Sometimes its nice to be treated to a world-class DJ in a setting reminiscent of the times of yesteryear, when “EDM” was not an everyday term and was still an underground movement whose concerts weren’t even called concerts but just simply, “raves”.

And while Skrillex has his spaceship, Avicii his massive human head, Datsik his vortex, and Deadmau5 his Cube, Zedd reminded us all that you don’t need to perform in high-tech futuristic fashion in order to succeed. While a show is all about the experience, we tend to forget that its really about the music, not the lights, lasers and strobes. Zedd played with a constant smile on his face. Why? Because it is clear that he is doing what he loves, and his fans love him for that. Zedd doesn’t need a multi-million dollar stage setup to have a good time, and neither did we. We commend Zedd for staying true to what this movement is truly all about, the music.

ID Festival 2012: New Venue, New Sounds, Same Old Good Time

We rolled into the venue at around 430pm due to an overload of traffic on I-76. It seemed as though everyone was heading to Identity Festival at Festival Pier on Penn’s Landing on July 29, 2012.

Although the weather was just a tad below scorching, Noisia had no problem getting the crowd roaring and singing along as the duo dropped the ever-popular “Raise Your Weapon” as their opener on the Rockstar Energy Stage.

As Noisia ended, many people headed into the tent where the venue had laid out its vendor tents/tables and people could cool off and collect themselves (or grab a brew from the central bar inside).

Twenty-two year old producer/remixer/DJ, Arty, was nothing short of phenomenal. Although dropping more Electro House than the original genre that brought him into the scene (Trance) fans were still extremely pleased. In the words of many, “He killed it.”

Next, we positioned ourselves right behind the pair known as Showtek. The Dutch hard dance act teamed up to unleash havoc on the fans using straight CDs (no DJ software) while his hype-man brother blasted a handheld cryo-gun into the crowd. Even though show goers expected more hard-style tracks from the group, Showtek did not have a problem getting them moving.

We then traveled back over to the main stage sponsored by iHome, to prepare ourselves for music prodigy, eighteen-year-old Madeon. The electro pop producer knows how to please. Using DJ tricks including holding drops until the next beat, and using his electrifying remixes, this youngster knows how to throw down.

Back at the Rockstar stage, headliner Excision was about to begin. We noticed an overload of bouncers in front of the crowd between them and the stage. We asked what the deal was because there hadn’t been nearly as many during previous acts. It turns out, Excision had asked for 8 bouncers to hold down the fans, and they decided to throw 12 in there. This confused us, but maybe it was the heart pounding, bone shaking bass, Excision’s signature sound, rattling our brains.

We’ve never heard music that loud in our lives; even earplugs could barely withstand it. Out of nowhere, the heavy bass music producer dropped a hardstyle tune in the mix, forcing the ground to shake even more due to the style of dance fans use for this specific genre of EDM.

Security was super tight during Eric Prydz, but that didn’t stop us from getting close to his side during his multi-genre set. As the night ended on Festival Pier, Prydz held down the fort, dropping all sorts of tunes to keep the fans happy. He really has come a long way since his single “Call on me,” getting more ‘filthy’ as the scene likes to say. It was joy all around and certainly a beautiful experience to end the day.

Then it was off to LiT Ultra Bar for the after party. Decibels Vol. 3 was presented by Art of Electronica and the show featured David Vaux, SRG, Love City DJs, & Dubsef.

Glow Garden Casts New Light on Tiberino Museum

The Tiberino Museum Garden Courtyard is one of the hidden gems of Philadelphia. Located in West Philadelphia, the courtyard is a large common area behind the museum. It is decorated with sculptures, 3D murals, a small stage, and a slew of other art.

On Saturday, May 19th, Funtown Productions/Bodypaint.Me and Psy-Fi Productions decided to cast some new light on the courtyard, black light.

The event, called Glow Garden, was a showcase of body painting, performance art, aerialists, glow hoopers, dancers, and special garden illuminations by JK Concepts.

The courtyard was transformed into a mystical land of glowing bubbles, fairies, and sick jungle beats produced by Mr. Manic, Agent Zero, Redhat, Golden Spiral, and CounterVulture.

We hope this is just the first of many Glow Garden events at the Tiberino. Those who weren’t there, certainly missed out. Those who were, are as excited for the next one as we are.
